La Guajira (in Wayuunaiki: Wajiira) is one of the 32 Departments in which Colombia is constituted. It is located in the north of the country and belongs to the group of departments of the Colombian Caribbean Region. It limits to the north and the west with the Caribbean Sea, to the east with Venezuela; to the south with the department of Cesar and to the southwest with the department of Magdalena. Its capital is Riohacha.

 

Its territory is constituted by the peninsula of La Guajira, in its center by a bajiplanicie; and to the south with parts of the Sierra Nevada, the Serrania del Perijá and the alluvial plain of the Ranchería and Cesar rivers. It covers an area of ​​20,848 km² - extension similar to that of El Salvador and Slovenia.

It is conformed by 15 municipalities, counting in 2011 with a population of 846,641 inhabitants. [3] Since the 1970s has been the arrival point of population movements and immigration from Middle Eastern countries, a fact that has caused an accelerated population growth that in turn generates a demographic wealth. In its territory there are three natural parks, five Native American towns and a large Muslim community that has had a transcendental role in its economy.
